Adena: Moundbuilder Activities for Students

* Kentucky Archaeology, Eposide two: The Adena People:Moundbuilders of Kentucky- A Companion guide for intermediate and middle school social studies teachers

  1. Activity 1: Elements of Culture-A Pre-viewing Activity Grade Level: 4-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video & “Elements of Culture” grids (located in Activity 1 PDF). Refer to Kentucky Archaeology,Eposide two: The Adena People:Moundbuilders of Kentucky- A Companion guide for intermediate and middle school social studies teachers for a comprehensive guide for content and lesson planning assistance.
  2. Activity 2: Digging for Facts Grade Level: 6-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, Completed “Elements of Culture” grids from Activity 1: Elements of Culture-A Pre-viewing Activity, Copies of “The Adena People” handout for each student (located in Activity 2 PDF), access to the internet (optional). Refer to Kentucky Archaeology,Eposide two: The Adena People:Moundbuilders of Kentucky- A Companion guide for intermediate and middle school social studies teachers for a comprehensive guide for content and lesson planning assistance.
  3. Activity 3: Pinch and Coil Pottery Grade Level: 4-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, Clay (1/2-1 pound per student. Self-hardening clay will dry to a harder state than plain clay but plain clay is more authentic and cheaper), freezer wrap cut into pieces about 9” X 9”-one per student, sturdy zip-close plastic bags-one per student, clay modeling tools or craft sticks, kitchen sponges cut into pieces about 3”x 3”-one per every four students, bowls for holding water-one per every four students.   4. Activity 4: Purposes of Art Grade Level: 4-8, Time Required, 45-60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, “Ceramic Bowl” handout for each student (located in Activity 4 PDF), access to book with examples of Native American art.
  5. Activity 5: The Changing Ethics of Archaeology Grade Level: 6-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, “Changing Ethics in Archaeology” handout for each student (located in Activity 5 PDF.)
  6. Activity 6: Changing Techniques in Archaeology Grade Level: 5-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, “Changing Techniques in Archaeology” handout for each student (located in Activity 6 PDF), ten plastic containers like those used for Cool Whip or ice cream, sand to fill the containers, small objects like coins, bobby pins, seeds, etc., ten cookies, five strainers, five tablespoons, five rulers, five paper-bags, five markers.
  7. Activity 7: Focus on Careers Grade Level: 6-8, Time Required, 60 minutes. Materials: Adena People video, “A. Gwynn Henderson, Archaeologist” handout for each student (located in Activity 7 PDF.)
