Mary was born in Kentucky as a free person. Her mother was Ellen Simpson, the daughter of Jilson and Eliza Hawkins. Ellen moved with her parents to Rising Sun, Indiana, a year after her daughter died. Although there was no explanation of Mary’s death, James Dinsmore did make note of the coffin he purchased. Like her sister or aunt, Eliza, Mary was buried on the hill above the Dinsmore house, with two fieldstones marking her grave.
