Boone County, Kentucky was a border county in a border state in the days before the Civil War. Kentucky was a slave-holding state and many Boone Countians owned slaves throughout the nineteenth century.

Boone County's most famous slave, Margaret Garner, was the subject of Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved.
