Update on the future library location in Hebron

Carrie Herrmann has 27 years of experience in libraries, most of those in Northern Kentucky. A Graduate of University of Kentucky, Carrie is the Library Director for Boone County Public Library.

A lot of people have asked me, “What’s happening with the Lents Branch?” and now that things are starting to come together, I’ve got some updates for you.  A lot has happened behind the scenes since my last blog post 7 Things to know about the Lents Branch Relocation Project.  Staff have worked diligently to divide the Lents Branch collection between the Community Center on Wheels (library bus) and our five remaining locations.  Many pieces of furniture were moved to our other locations. Early in 2016, the Lents Branch was placed on the market to sell.  We plan to use the money from the sale to help build the new facility.

In late 2015, we posted a Request for Qualification (RFQ) for architectural and engineering firms.  We received several responses to our RFQ and it took a long time to check all of their references.  It is with great pleasure that I announce that Brandstetter Carroll, Inc. in partnership with HBM Architects, has been chosen to design our new location in Hebron.

Brandstetter Carroll Inc. (BCI) is a firm of architects, Engineers, landscape architects and planners that was founded in 1979 in Lexington, Kentucky for the express purpose of providing professional design services to public sector clients. Since the Firm’s inception, BCI has grown to a staff of over 60 members and, in addition to Lexington, has offices in Cincinnati and Cleveland, Ohio and Dallas, Texas. BCI has completed over 25 public library assignments throughout Kentucky.

BCI has also been involved in numerous community-enhancing projects in Boone County, including Boone Woods Park, Union Park, Historic Burlington sidewalk improvements, England-Idlewild Parks, and various engineering assignments in the community. BCI is partnering with HBM Architects for the Hebron building project in order to deliver a first-class library to the County.

HBM Architects is an Ohio-based, nationally recognized library planning and design firm that has been dedicated to helping libraries create and improve their facilities for more than 40 years. They use a dynamic and collaborative process to design flexible, future-minded library facilities that can adapt to changes in how libraries serve their communities and the materials, technology, and programs they offer.

“Libraries are an important and integral part of each community and therefore special consideration and a carefully thought-out design solution is needed. Our goal is to provide an innovative and inspired library building that will reflect the unique context and culture of the Boone County community. We are excited to get started on the new Hebron Branch project and hope you will be able to join us for upcoming input sessions.”—Monica Sumner, BCI.

Speaking of the upcoming input session: We invite all Boone County residents to attend a planning meeting with the architects on Tuesday, September 20, from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Main Library (1786 Burlington Pike in Burlington). This will be your library, Boone County, and we want to hear from you!  At the planning session, you will see images and design styles to spark ideas and develop a vision for the new building that you think will best meet our community’s needs. Then you will roll up your sleeves and help us develop ideas for how the site, building form, and interior layout could be organized.

Please come with an open mind, a vision for the future, and the enthusiasm that makes Boone County an exciting and unique place to live.  Light refreshments will be served.

  1. It has been quite a long time since an update. Please tell us the latest progress on getting our Hebron Library.

  2. Hi Karen: Our director is actually working on a blog post with updates. The architects are currently working on drawings for the new building and interior colors have been selected. The new blog post about it should go live in a couple weeks and it will be pushed out on Facebook and available on the homepage of our website.

  3. Hi Michael: We are working with the architects and we have a design for the new building. We are also working with engineers on the technical aspects of the building. We hope to break ground this fall and open next fall. As soon as we have final drawings, we will share them in a blog post.
