-John Greenway was born in Huntsville, Alabama, and graduated from Yale University with a degree in engineering. ​ Rising to the upper echelons of the mining industry in Minnesota and Arizona, Greenway took a professional break to join the Rough Riders at the beginning of the Spanish-American War.  He met his wife, [[isabella_d._selmes_ferguson_greenway_king|Isabella]],​ through his friendship with her first husband, Robert H.
