-Martha was born in New York, the daughter of Isabella Selmes and Robert H.M. Ferguson. ​ Much of her childhood was spent in the mountains of southwestern New Mexico. ​ A very outgoing and well-traveled young lady, Martha married Charles Breasted, the son of Egyptologist James H.
