June 8 Update from Library Director, Carrie Herrmann

All Boone County Public Library locations will reopen to the public on Monday, June 15 except for Chapin Memorial which opens Tuesday, June 16!  This is the start of Phase 3 of our reopening plan. Below are our modified hours:

All locations except Chapin

  • Monday-Friday 10 am – 6 pm
  • Saturday 1 – 5 pm

Chapin Memorial

  • Tuesday & Thursday 11 am – 6 pm
  • Wednesday Noon – 5 pm

Library staff have been working hard to get ready for reopening. We have put safety protocols in place for both your protection and our staff’s protection. Please understand that wherever there are people there is an inherent risk of contracting the coronavirus. We can only act to reduce risk, not eliminate it. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we adjust to meet the Governor’s Healthy at Work guidelines.

Moving forward it will not be business as usual. There will be new procedures and service limitations. We will need to limit the number of people in our buildings, and in some cases, limit the number of people in designated areas of the Library to adhere to the guidelines and to allow for social distancing. All locations are limited to 33% maximum capacity.  For this reason there may be times when we will have to ask you to wait outside until someone has left.  We ask that you limit your visit with us to one hour so that others may also use the library.

We have removed half of the furniture from the public areas and all of the toys from the children’s area.  In addition, we have scattered the computers throughout the building so that all of the computers are available for use, but they are not located in the same area to help with social distancing.  Aisles will be marked as one way and 6 foot markers will be placed on the floors to help you social distance.  Restrooms have been converted to automatic commodes, sinks, and urinals.  And, in some locations, only the Family Restrooms will be open for use.

Staff will be wearing masks for your protection, and we are asking that you wear masks for our protection.  Plexiglas shields have been installed at all service desks, and we will have a smaller number of staffed stations available.  I highly encourage you to download the Library app so you can check out your own materials.  We also encourage you to continue using curbside pickup whenever possible for picking up library holds.

You will be able to come in to apply for a new library card or upgrade your temporary card during open hours. You will also be able to browse items to check out, send faxes, print/scan, and use our computers.  Please use the outside book drops to return all library materials; the inside book drops will be closed. Contact-free returns help protect you and our staff.  All returned items are quarantined for three days to reduce the potential for contamination. After returning an item, it will take several days before it is removed from your account. You will not accrue any overdue fines.  Fines for overdue materials will continue to be waived until further notice.

We are not accepting any donations of books, magazines or other items at this time.  We do not have the space needed to quarantine donations.

Study Rooms will be open, but we will limit the number of people in each room.  Meeting Rooms will not be available for public use or for Library programs.  BCPL is currently using the meeting rooms to quarantine returned materials per CDC guidelines and to store the furniture removed from the public areas.

In person programs are canceled through July. We are offering online storytimes that can be found on our YouTube channel.  We will offer some book discussion groups online and are looking at some other virtual programming ideas.  Our Summer Reading Program, which runs through July 31, has moved totally online.  In person programming will not return until we enter Phase 4 of our reopening plan.

We are available by phone, email, or social media to answer any library-related questions that you may have. Check our website and social media platforms for future updates.

We can’t wait to see you!

  1. I have requested the same 2 books for pickup twice, but still have received no call. Can you advise?

  2. Hi Daniele – Please let me know the title of the book, and I will check your account. Or you can also call us at 859-342-2665 and choose the branch of your choice. We are happy to help! Thanks!
